Anywhere you go in Toronto, you see massive construction projects, identified by their iron network of scaffolding, suspended and cantilevered platforms, and edge and perimeter fencing. Many future engineers and skilled trades people can remember back to a time as a child looking through a hole in the fencing surrounding a construction site, fascinated by all the activity. All that scaffolding and shoring that distinguishes a construction site? It’s all provided by TCS (also known as Technical Concrete Solutions).
TCS, a Newmarket-based construction-supply firm, is at the heart of most GTA construction projects. The company is a leader in providing construction materials and technical support, focusing on scaffolding sales and rentals and concrete supplies. Developers and their teams of builders can source all the infrastructure supplies they need from one place, from shoring, formwork, equipment maintenance, on-site labour and equipment sourcing and importing, all tailored to project specifications. Most people outside the building industry won’t recognize the name, the company remains in the background to create the working infrastructure with which developers create their enormous and beautiful structures that get all the acclaim in architecture magazines.
TCS works with the biggest and best construction developers in Canada. When the time came to add new warehousing and operational space to meet their own organizational needs, they looked to pre-engineered steel structures instead of using traditional building systems that rely on materials such as brick and mortar. They called in Double Black Construction as their preferred builder to provide this innovative metal building solution. As experienced as TCS is with building design, the company recognized pre-engineering’s cost-effectiveness and lower on-going maintenance costs to build quickly and meet their changing business needs.
Like many great start-ups, TCS started from the vision of one person. Rob Giordano, a forming and shoring specialist working for a large global construction company in the mid-2000s, saw a gap in the industry. His hands-on experience and extensive on-site knowledge led him to create a company that would rent out scaffolding and streamline the process of setting up logistics at jobsites.
His TCS Construction company quickly grew to support customers and their suppliers with full-service material management and specialized labour. The company also offers scaffolding erection, stair towers, structure hoarding and overhead protection – much needed mandatory safety measures within the construction industry.
As the business grew and they began to exceed their storage space, TCS turned to Double Black Construction. As builder with an in-house team to deliver the ideal warehouse facility, John Lohan and his Double Black Construction team didn’t just build a new facility, they provided the solution for TCS to increase their capacity, service more clients and increase their rental income.
Offering so many project support materials requires a substantial investment into their material management system, including physical space to safely warehouse all the materials in a clean, organized way. The increased operations space allowed for larger economies of scope and provided the opportunity to increase revenue that can be earned from a growing base of GTA clients.
The final building is modern and sophisticated in design, durable and reduces operational and maintenance costs with its energy-efficient environmental systems.
Pre-engineered building solutions are an intelligent way for organizations to get the industrial or commercial building they need, customized to their business needs. Metal buildings provide a substantial long-term return on investment within short-term construction deadlines. View our photo gallery of the TCS project from January 2022.
