Direct Access to Manufacturers Creates Supply Chain Efficiency

As the total turnkey construction manager for North America’s largest pre-engineered building manufacturers, Double Black Construction creates efficient control over construction timelines.
Regardless of where we are in the economic cycle, business strives to move forward. Retail shelves need to stay stocked and customer orders need to be filled. While most of us recognize the fluctuation of supply chains at a consumer or retail level, the complex layer of industrial and commercial operations is equally susceptible to longer-term shocks and disorder.
The fragile supply chain infrastructure struggled in the face of global disruptions due to the pandemic, material scarcity and labour shortages. In response, some industries saw the benefit of keeping their supply lines shorter. Larger companies have started doing less outsourcing meaning more manufacturing has begun to return to domestic factories. Nowhere has this pattern benefitted customers during a time of high interruption than in the pre-engineered building industry – thanks to unique operational partnerships.
Double Black Construction works as the preferred builder for pre-engineered metal structure manufacturers to create the foundation
and install the building
once orders have been placed by clients. The company works behind the scenes as the general contractor of commercial, industrial and agricultural facilities to growing company operations. Their partnership with the top, recognized manufacturers (such as Toro Steel Buildings, Nucor, Olympia and Summit Steel Buildings) ensures clients get the best built final structure according to deadlines.
With the world’s supply chains in disarray during the years of the COVID pandemic, maintaining a close domestic relationship led to reliable supply of manufacturing materials, reduced bottlenecks and more dependable construction times that other independent builders were not able to maintain.
Working with the Ideal Construction Team Gets the Best Results
Double Black Construction offers total turnkey projects, design-build, construction management and general contracting services. The company is capable of completing all the phases of construction with their own forces to allow them to be cost efficient and to meet adhere to tight schedules. This success is directly tied to their partnerships with dependable pre-engineered building manufacturers across Canada and the U.S. Double Black Construction has earned trust by delivering quality workmanship to elevate the reputation of their manufacturing partners.
John Lohan
leads the Double Black Construction team. He has extensive experience working in the pre-engineered metal building and construction industries, starting in the industry in 2004. Since that time, he has worked with Canadian and global customers, governments and architects to supply, engineer and install metal buildings across the globe. The Double Black Construction staff includes professional engineers, site superintendents and skilled tradespeople who have been with the firm for over 10 years. Regardless of a client’s need, the team is equipped to build to the manufacturer specs, ranging from a 50’ by 50’ storage shed to a new 100,000 square foot industrial processing plant.
Pre-engineered building structures are constructed from heavy industrial I-beams and steel roof and wall systems with various architectural profiles shipped directly to the building site. Industry estimates suggest construction times are slashed by up to 33% and have lower materials costs with pre-engineered systems. These cold-formed steel buildings systems produce less waste, allow for easier installation, and provide tighter seals to avoid leaks. Computer-aided design (CAD) and Building Information Modeling (BIM)
aid in the production of flexible steel construction, allowing much of the labour to be done off-site, making on-site assembly more straightforward. These savings in time and materials are passed along to the client.
Partnerships Help Guarantee More Reliability in the Supply Chain
Throughout the pandemic, industrial and consumer channels were hit hard by shipping delays and material shortages. Double Black Construction’s experience of working with select large-scale manufacturers means they encountered few work stoppages or delays due to not being able access the materials they needed.
Lohan and teams of engineers usually schedule flexibility into their schedules for the inevitable small interruptions that happen on construction projects at the best of times. Obviously, the last few years have been challenging for most builders. Flexibility allows any unexpected delay in getting specific parts to be made up in later stages of installation. They continue to meet the final completion date without needing to reschedule from their critical path.
Partnerships with large manufacturers
and their large, warehoused inventories fortunately mean necessary components are never far away. It’s an advantage to ensure completion dates do not get affected. Downtime always needs to be avoided on jobsites. While most of Double Black Construction’s clients are understanding to the larger circumstances, building a comprehensive plan and communicating effectively makes their installations move more smoothly. Managing an everchanging construction landscape is easier when you can rely on the strengths of larger manufacturing partners.

If buildings were superheroes, steel would be wearing the cape. But even superheroes have their kryptonite, and steel's arch nemesis is good old-fashioned rust.
